The Steps Of A Believer

The Steps Of A Believer

Exodus 13:21-22 – The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.  The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

Since becoming believers in Christ Jesus, our steps are not the same as they used to be.  We have become a people in which God delights in our way.  Why does God delight in our way?  God delights in our way because we have allowed Him to establish our steps (Psalms 37:23 and 119:133).  As Christians, we know the importance of our walk.  We are aware it is not in us to direct our own steps because a step in the wrong direction could mean death (Jeremiah 10:23 and 1 Samuel 20:3).  Hence, we see the importance of having God be our Guide.  God guided Israel from Egyptian bondage to the wilderness and from the wilderness to the Promise Land.  For as long as we continue to follow God’s guidance, we will never enter into a state of darkness, but rather we will rise above the ashes of annihilation and enter into our heavenly home on high.

Although God is the best tour guide life has to offer, this does not mean there would be no disturbances.  The devil will always pursue us, in an effort to win us back to Him or simply to take us by force.  As we take steps as believers, there will be some disappointments.  We will have expectations on this journey, which might not get met the way we want them to, but we must remember God is our Guide and He knows best.  There will be difficulties on our spiritual journey, but there is no such thing as a difficulty our Guiding Light cannot overcome and deal with along the way.  As we walk in the newness of life, there will be some discomforts.  However, we must continue to trust in God and allow Him to relax us and give us the promised rest He liberally assures.  There will be some dangers, but for as long as we continue to keep our eyes on the Lord, trust in His word, and stay within the borders of His kingdom, then no weapon formed against us shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).  At times, we will want to move forward, after we have overcome all the dry holes, dead ends, and detours, but during this pilgrimage, God may want to delay us, for the purposes of preparing us for the next steps we will have to take in this journey.

God did so much for Israel of yesteryear and He is doing so much for us as children of His today.  God served Israel in more than the capacity of guide, but God also guarded and gladdened Israel.  God will guard us today like He guarded Israel.  God separated Israel potentially (Exodus 8:22-23), positionally (Exodus 14:19-20), and practically (Exodus 14:22-28).  As we step as believers in Christ Jesus, God separates us from the world and wickedness to guard us against Satan and sin (2 Corinthians 6:17).

If we allow God to be our guard and our guide, then He will make us His eternal guest.  It is at this point we will be glad.  Let us rejoice like Israel rejoiced in Exodus 14:30-15:1, knowing we have victory over our enemies for as long as our steps are ordered by the Lord.
