Fellowship: Family First

In Acts 2:42-47, the Bible reads, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”  In the first century church, we see believers engaging in practices together, which should be a pattern worthy of imitation among brethren today.

Christians Devoted Themselves (Act 2:42)

  • These believers were dedicated to personal, spiritual growth.  Through growth, we will worship God, study His word, & pray without ceasing.

Christians Were In Awe Of God (Acts 2:43)

  • Where is our fear of the Lord?  The Bible clearly states that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom & instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).  Many wonders & signs were done to confirm the word then (Mark 16:20), but we have the complete word today (1 Corinthians 13:10).  As we read our Bibles, may the same awe that came upon them also come upon us.

Christians Helped One Another (Acts 2:44-45)

  • Jesus said, “For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me” (John 12:8).  There will be times in which brethren among us will need help.  By simply putting God first & doing His will, many will be helped because we will seek opportunities to express kindness.

Christians Did Things Together (Acts 2:46)

  • How strong will this congregation be if we truly treated one another as family?  Christians prayed together.  Christians studied God’s word together.  Christians shared in common meals together.  How much closer, stronger, & trusting will we be, IF such things did not require an appointment or only to discuss “business”?
